MOSCOW, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Moscow welcomes the recent visit of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's top leader Kim Jong Un to China in the hope that it will help ease tensions on the Korean Peninsula, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Thursday.
"We estimate contacts between countries on the basis of equality and mutual interests as an important element of international relations and we believe that any activity in the region, which can lead to a relaxation of tension on the Korean Peninsula, can only be lauded," Zakharova said at a weekly news briefing.
At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Kim paid an unofficial visit to China from Sunday to Wednesday and held talks with Xi.
Zakharova said Russia is actively working on consolidating the positive tendencies in the situation on and around the Korean Peninsula.
In particular, Russia is considering organizing a series of meetings in Moscow with representatives of involved countries "in the nearest future," she said.
