Trump vows "strong action" on immigration along U.S.-Mexico border

WASHINGTON, April 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that his administration would be "taking strong action" on immigration, a day after he said he wants to use the military to secure the country's border with Mexico.

"Our Border Laws are very weak while those of Mexico & Canada are very strong. Congress must change these Obama era, and the other, laws NOW!" Trump said in a tweet.

"The Democrats stand in our way -- they want people to pour into our country unchecked ... CRIME!" the president said. "We will be taking strong action today."

During a lunch session at the White House with leaders of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on Tuesday, Trump told reporters that his administration is going to be guarding the U.S.-Mexico border with the military until his long-promised border wall is built.

"That's a big step," Trump said of the proposed measure that, according to the White House, included mobilizing the National Guard.

Trump has recently reiterated his hardline stance on immigration, while repeatedly calling out Mexico over border security and stressing the need for a border wall on the southern border of the United States.

The White House said the president has received briefings on what it called "the growing influx of illegal immigration, drugs and violent gang members from Central America" and is directing an administrative strategy to confront it and protect the United States' national security.
