UNITED NATIONS, July 12 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday called for a political settlement of the Syria crisis, saying there is no military solution.
"The UN thinks that there is no military solution. The solution is political," he told reporters.
The world body is committed to the Geneva talks to find a political solution in line with Security Council Resolution 2254, which provides a roadmap for a political settlement, he said.
Guterres called for the formation of a constitutional committee as agreed on by the Syrian government and rebel groups earlier this year in Sochi, Russia, as an important tool for a future political solution.
"That is our commitment. That is our objective. And the message I have for all Syrians is (that) only a political solution can guarantee the future, the reconstruction, and a democratic and non-sectarian character of the state."
