HANOI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Border forces of Vietnams central Ha Tinh province have detained two Lao men for smuggling 52 cakes of heroin and 25 kg of crystal methamphetamine into Vietnam, local media reported on Monday.
The two detainees, including a 46-year-old man named Thao Khun, carried two suitcases, which were full of heroin and crystal methamphetamine, as tourists crossing Cau Treo international border gate in Ha Tinh, online newspaper VnExpress reported.
Khun confessed that he has joined a drug-trafficking ring in Laos after many years of being hired to transport heroin and methamphetamine in the country.
According to Vietnamese law, those convicted of smuggling over 600 grams of heroin or more than 2.5 kg of methamphetamine are punishable by death. Making or trading 100 grams of heroin or 300 grams of other illegal drugs also faces death penalty.
