NANJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Police in east China's Jiangsu Province have detained more than 90 suspects in connection to an alleged telecommunications fraud case.
Police in Yancheng City said the case involved more than 20 million yuan (3 million U.S. dollars), and at least 10,000 people from across the country were defrauded.
Police were informed of the scammers in August last year, when a Yancheng resident reported being swindled out of about 2,000 yuan. The investigation lasted about five months.
Last year, seven people were sentenced to prison in east China's Shandong Province for involvement in a telecom fraud case linked to the death of a teenager.
Xu Yuyu, a high school graduate from Linyi, died of cardiac arrest in August 2016 after being defrauded out of 9,900 yuan, which she intended to use to pay university tuition fees.
