GABORONE, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Botswana won the netball and volleyball golds to finish third at the Confederation of University and Colleges Sports Associations (CUCSA) Games that concluded here on Saturday.
The week-long games attracted eight Southern African university teams competing in 10 sports in Gaborone, capital of Botswana.
South Africa finished first on the medal tally with 25 golds, 16 silvers and seven bronzes. They were followed by Zimbabwe (10-8-13), while the host Botswana placed third (9-18-32).
On Saturday, it was the netball and ladies volleyball teams that brought smiles to the local supporters as they put up sterling performances to clinch golds.
Botswana recorded a resounding victory of 61-16 over Zimbabwe in the netball final while the ladies volleyball team defeated South Africa 3-1 in the final.
South Africa won golds in both the men's and women's soccer finals and also became the overall winners in athletics competitions.
On the other hand, Botswana reached the men's basketball final and also finished third in rugby sevens, which made its debut in the Games.
Other teams that competed at the Games are Zambia and Malawi who came fourth and fifth respectively while Namibia, Kingdom of Eswatini and Lesotho did not record any medals.
According to the chairperson of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) Thapelo Pabalinga, Botswana did a great job in organizing the Games.
