RIGA, July 27 (Xinhua) -- A fire broke out in a neighborhood in the Latvian capital on Thursday night, causing no casualties, emergency services said Friday.
The fire in the Plavnieki residential neighborhood that spread over a 3,000-square meter large area also affected a hangar and caused the explosion of several oxygen and acetylene tanks, State Fire and Rescue Service official Janis Grinbergs said on the radio.
It took firefighters some three hours to contain the blaze, and by Friday morning the fire was put out almost completely. Rescue work continued at the site on Friday.
Grinbergs said that due to extremely high temperatures at the site, 12 firefighters suffered heat exhaustion, and one of them was hospitalized.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
