BEIJING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- China hopes that Cambodia's upcoming general election goes smoothly, the Foreign Ministry said Friday.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang made the remarks at a press briefing, saying China supported the "Cambodian people's independent choice of development path in line with their national conditions."
Geng said that the election was part of Cambodia's internal affairs and a major event in the political life of the Cambodian people.
"China also hopes that the international community will play a constructive role for the Cambodian people to successfully hold elections and promote the country's stable development," he said.
Cambodia is scheduled to hold the general election for the 125-seat National Assembly on Sunday.
Twenty political parties will contest the election, which will see some 8.38 million people cast their ballots, according to Cambodia's National Election Committee.
About 306 international observers from over 40 countries will monitor Cambodia's general election on July 29, a spokesman for the committee said Thursday.
