DHAKA, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- As elsewhere in the world, Bangladesh Hindu community also celebrated Janmashtami, which falls on Sunday, with due religious fervor and enthusiasm.
The festival marks the birth anniversary of Hindu god Krishna.
The festival since Saturday morning brought thousands of Hindus to the temples in old part of capital Dhaka.
Temples were adorned with flowers and echoed by the melodious chants of Krishna bhajans (song with religious theme or spiritual ideas).
On Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, devotees observed fast and decorate Krishna idols with fancy clothes and beautiful ornaments.
Hindu community in Dhaka and elsewhere brought out colorful processions displaying the eventful life of Krishna and hold other programs on this occasion.
The day is a public holiday in Bangladesh.
Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in separate messages have greeted members of the Hindu community.
Hamid also hosted a reception party for Hindu community people.
Hindus believe that Janmashtami brings a message of unity and friendship and bridges the communal divide.?
