UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 21 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed sadness over the ferry disaster on Lake Victoria in Tanzania.
In a statement attributable to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, the UN chief extended his "heartfelt" condolences to the families of the victims, the government and people of Tanzania and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
"The United Nations expresses its solidarity with Tanzania during this difficult time and stands ready to support as required," the statement said.
A passenger ferry capsized on Lake Victoria, in Ukurewe district, in Mwanza of Tanzania, on Thursday.
A government spokesperson was quoted by Tanzanian national media as saying the death toll has reached 131.
Tanzanian President John Magufuli has announced a four-day mourning for the victims.
