LISBON, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- The Portuguese parliament unanimously approved a motion on solidarity with victims of a strong earthquake and ensuing tsunami that has so far killed more than 1,400 deaths in Indonesia.
The motion, presented by President of Portuguese Parliament Ferro Rodrigues, expressed Portugal's solidarity with the authorities and the people of Indonesia and conveyed their deepest regret to the families of the victims.
On Wednesday, Ferro Rodrigues sent a message of "regret and solidarity" to his Indonesian counterpart.
"At this particularly difficult time for Indonesia and the Indonesian people, I wish to convey to you, on behalf of the Assembly of the Republic, our deepest sympathy," Rodrigues said in the message.
A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Sulawesi island, in Indonesia on Friday, which was followed by a tsunami, devastating the city of Palu and surrounding areas.
According to the United Nations, some 200,000 people need assistance.
