MADRID, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- Two-time figure skating world champion, Javier Fernandez confirmed on Wednesday that he will retire in 2019.
The 27-year-old Spaniard, who won gold at the World Championships in 2015 and 2016 and who was European champion in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, said the 2019 European Championships, which will be held in Belarus between January 21 - 27 next year, will be his final competition.
"I have to think about the level of competition in which I want to compete, because my body and also my mind won't arrive at the level and I have to accept that," he said at an event in Madrid.
If Fernandez is able to win a seventh successive European Crown he will be the first man in history to achieve the feat. Although Austrian, Karl Schafr won eight continental titles, he didn't win them consecutively. Fernandez is currently touring Spain with a show 'Revolution on Ice, which has already been seen by over 20,000 people.
