RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Flamengo have named Abel Braga as their head coach for the 2019 season, replacing Dorival Junior, who departed following club elections.
Braga, a former Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil international center-back, agreed in principal to a one-year deal at a meeting on Tuesday night, Flamengo's president-elect Rodolfo Landim said.
"We came to an agreement regarding the main details of the contract," Landim, who was elected for a three-year term as president last Saturday, told reporters.
"We still have to finalize some things but we are going to be together next year."
This will be Braga's second spell as coach of Flamengo following a brief period in charge in 2004.
The 66-year-old, who was capped once for Brazil's national team in 1978, has been out of work since parting ways with Fluminense in June.
Flamengo finished second in this year's Brazilian Serie A, eight points behind champions Palmeiras. Braga will officially take on his new duties in January, when Flamengo begin pre-season training.
