TOKYO, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed mixed on Thursday on concerns over the prolonged U.S. government shutdown with the advent of earnings season here adding to investors opting to not take up aggressive positions.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 19.09 points, or 0.09 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 20,574.63.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 5.57 points, or 0.36 percent, higher at 1,552.60.
By the close of play, land transportation, food, and electric power and gas issues comprised notable decliners, while securities, metal product, and bank issues led those that gained the most.
