JAKARTA, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's rising star Jonatan Christie stunned second-seeded Shi Yuqi of China 22-20, 21-6 to advance into the quarterfinals at 2019 Indonesia Masters here on Thursday.
Jonatan's win was a reminiscing of the two players' clash at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, which was also won by the host country's player.
"I was a bit nervous at the beginning of the match as my scores were neck-to-neck to his and sometimes he led in the first game. I did not focus my thought on winning during the first game. In the second game I did not give chance for him who intended to play in rallies," Jonatan said on the sidelines in the landmark badminton arena of Istora Senayan here.
The 2018 Asian Games gold medalist will take on India's eighth-seeded Srikanth Kidambi on Friday.
In the another match-up, defending champion Anthony Sinisuka Ginting defeated Chinese shuttler Zhao Junpeng in two straight games 21-15, 21-12.
In the quarterfinals, the number seven seed will face off Japan's world number one Kento Momota.
Chen Long is the only Chinese player qualified for the quarterfinals, where he will be up against Denmark's Viktor Axelsen.
The Indonesia Masters is a BWF Super 500 tournament ongoing in Jakarta from January 22 to 27.
