LONDON, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Chinese students and visiting scholars at Britain's second largest city of Manchester on Sunday celebrated the upcoming Chinese new year with a self-sponsored spring festival gala.
The gala, staged by Chinese Students and Scholars Association Manchester, provided attendees a vivid glimpse of China's rich culture and traditions with a variety of performances, including classical dance, instrumental ensemble, rap and musical sketch.
Addressing the gala, Zheng Xiyuan, Consul General of China's Consulate General in Manchester, said Chinese people have been honoring the tradition of upholding the education and the overseas students are part of the country's most valuable resources.
Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor June Hitchen, said the spring festival is the fantastic opportunity for her city to celebrate the strong relations with the Chinese students here.
Manchester benefits from the Chinese community in the city, she said.
Addressing the gala in a video message, the President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester Dame Nancy Rothwell said that Chinese students have contributed immensely to the city and the life here.
Chinese New Year festival falls on Tuesday this year. The coming year is the Year of the Pig according to the Chinese zodiac, which features a 12-year cycle with each year represented by a specific animal.
