RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday fired Secretary-General Gustavo Bebianno amid a week-long scandal over alledged laundry of campaign funds.
In an announcement made by a spokesperson of the presidency, Bolsonaro thanked Bebianno for his dedication and wishes him success in future endeavors.
In a video released by the presidential office, the president said "relevant matters" made him reconsider Bebianno's permanence in the office, but he acknowledged that Bebianno's work as his presidential campaign coordinator was important to his victory.
Bolsonaro's Social Liberal Party (PSL), of which Bebianno is president, has recently been accused of using puppet candidates to launder money last year. Bebianno has denied any irregularities.
Bebianno will be replaced by retired Army General Floriano Peixoto.
