BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland welcomes and supports cities on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to conduct exchanges and cooperation in various forms on the basis of upholding the 1992 Consensus, a spokesperson said Wednesday.
Multiple Taiwan mayors and county chiefs recently led delegations to visit the mainland to conduct exchanges and cooperation with relevant cities and achieved positive results, said An Fengshan, a spokesperson with the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, at a press conference.
"We welcome more counties and cities in Taiwan to join in (such visits)," An said. "As long as the two sides work together to overcome obstacles and actively push for exchanges and cooperation, Taiwan compatriots will enjoy more solid benefits."
Responding to public voice in Taiwan calling for adding city-level exchanges across the Strait into the 31 preferential policies for Taiwan, An said the voice reflected Taiwan compatriots' desire for enhanced cross-Strait exchanges and common development.
An said there were many things that can be down to promote cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, calling on compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to work hard in this regard.
