AMMAN, April 4 (Xinhua) -- Jordan on Thursday demanded Syria to release all Jordanian prisoners and detainees and to follow international laws adopted in this regard.
Jordan made the statement during a meeting at the Foreign Ministry with Ayman Alloush, chargé d'affaires of the Syrian embassy in Amman.
Sufian Qudah, the ministry's spokesperson, said Zeid Al Louzi, the ministry's secretary general, asked the Syrian diplomat to convey to the Syrian government Jordan's concern and dismay over the repeated arrests of Jordanians by the Syrian government without any reasons.
He expressed hope that the Syrian side will fulfill Jordan's demands and those by the families of the detainees and immediately release them.
"If Syria has some concerns about some individuals, it should not allow them in, but to allow them to enter Syria and then to arrest them is rejected and unjustified....the number of Jordanians being arrested and detained in Syria is rising," said the official.
Jordan summoned the Syrian diplomat for four times already over the past period over the issue to demand the release of the Jordanian prisoners and detainees, he said.
He added that Jordanians go for tourism to Syria and get arrested for unknown reasons.
More than 30 Jordanians have already been arrested since the reopening of the borders mid October 2018.
The ministry has been following up on the issue extensively.
Qudah added that Jordan's position on Syria is constant and that the Kingdom calls for a political solution to the situation in Syria.
The Syrian diplomat pledged to convey Jordan's message and follow up on the issue and get answers in the next few days on the issue of the Jordanians prisoners and detainees.
