COLOMBO, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka will face strong winds and heavy rains in the coming days as a severe cyclonic storm landed on northeast of Trincomalee, in Eastern Sri Lanka, the Meteorology Department said Tuesday.
The Meteorology Department said the storm was likely to intensify further into an extremely severe cyclonic storm during the next 36 hours and move north-northeastwards.
Cloudy skies, strong winds and heavy rains were expected to continue over the island and surrounding sea areas.
"Very heavy falls above 150 mm can be expected at some places in the Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western and North-Western provinces and in the Mannar district, in the north and also heavy falls about 100 mm are also expected at some places elsewhere," the Meteorology Department said.
The general public, naval and fishing communities are requested to be cautious, the department said.
