Chinese passenger cars arrive and stop at Havana, Cuba, May 20, 2019. Intense and blue, like the bright Cuban sky, are the Chinese passenger cars that will soon be put into operation as part of an ambitious and costly program to modernize Cuba's railroad system. The island has just received the first 56 cars, from a batch of 240 which it acquired with a Chinese credit, payable in 15 years, and will arrive in Havana at a rate of 80 each year from 2019 to 2021. This is the first time in 44 years that Cuba has received new railroad cars. Before it, the island's railroad system had been operated with second-hand cars for decades. Now, with the help of the China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC), the CRRC Tangshan Co., Ltd. specifically manufactured the brand-new cars for the Caribbean nation.
