ACCRA, May 31 (Xinhua) -- Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo asked the Black Stars, Ghana's national football team, to win the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title which has eluded them for 37 years.
"Teamwork is absolutely critical. You have to work for each other. Helping each other to win the trophy, that's the teamwork we are looking at. The 37 years wait since we last won the Cup will come to an end this year," he said when he met the team on Thursday night.
He assured the team that the government would provide the needed support to enable it to succeed in the soccer fiesta.
The chairman of the team's management committee Kofi Kodua Sarpong said the team is united and ready to go and battle it out to win the AFCON.
"We are going to Dubai to prepare, to work very hard and we know that only victory makes our people smile, so we are going to make sure that we bring victory to our country," said captain Andre Ayew.
The Black Stars are in Group F of the AFCON with Cameroon, Benin, and Guinea Bissau.
The team will leave Ghana on to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, to finalize preparations for the tournament in Egypt.
