ZHENGZHOU, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Uneven rainfall, serious drought and flooding, and abrupt alternation of the two disasters are expected to hit China's Yellow River basin this year, authorities said Tuesday.
According to the flood control and drought relief headquarters of Yellow River, more precipitation is forecast in the source region and south of midstream, while less rain in other reaches of the river, which will easily lead to mountain torrents and flood.
Yellow River has not seen a big flood with a flow of over 10,000 cubic meters per second for 36 consecutive years, which means the risk of a big flood is increasing, said Yue Zhongming, director of the Yellow River Conservancy Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources.
Regions along the Yellow River are bracing for possible flood and drought, strengthening dam checks and repair, and improving emergency plans to ensure flood control and drinking water safety.
