BEIJING, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Australia managed to edge out the Hungarians in a penalty-shootout after a brilliant game at the FINA Water Polo World League Super Final Men 2019 in Belgrade on Friday, according to the official website of world swimming governing body FINA.
After an almost perfect first half Hungary blew away its 5-1 lead, and even though they still led 7-5 before the last period, this advantage didn't last till the end.
The Aussie offense improved significantly in the second half, and by netting five goals in the last period they even set themselves up to earn a straight win but the Hungarians could force the shootout with a man-up goal two seconds from time. At last the Aussies prevailed.
Australia will meet Serbia in the semifinal as the latter beat Canada 20-5, while Croatia and Spain also won with big margins to reach the semifinal.
Croatia bt Japan 20-13, while Spain defeated Kazakhstan 19-10.
