BEIJING, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The following are the highlights of China's key technology news from the past week:

MATERIALS LAB

Construction of a materials laboratory started recently in the city of Dongguan in southern China's Guangdong Province.

To solve the problem of high-end material demand in the fields such as information, energy, life and health and aerospace, the lab will carry out long-term, sustained and interdisciplinary basic research on the frontier of materials science.

AI PEDIATRICIANS

Shanghai Children's Medical Center recently presented a pediatric diagnostic system using artificial intelligence (AI) technology that could give medical advice on more than 300 illnesses.

Trained on millions of previous cases to learn how to make diagnoses, the new AI "pediatricians," the first in Shanghai, are capable of clinical service guiding, carrying out pre-examination and intelligent diagnosis with an accuracy rate of more than 90 percent, the hospital said.

SMARTER BEIJING AIRPORT

The adoption of multiple new technologies will power the Beijing Daxing International Airport, making it smarter and more efficient, according to China's civil aviation authorities.

The comprehensive application of smart new technologies such as self check-in, self baggage check-in, and facial recognition in security checks will greatly contribute to making the new airport a smart one.

AI GOVERNANCE

A professional committee under China's Ministry of Science and Technology has issued principles of next-generation AI governance, pledging to develop responsible AI in China.

Xue Lan, dean of Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University and director of China's national professional committee on next generation AI governance, said recently that the principles are introduced to better coordinate the development and governance of the booming technology and to ensure AI to be secure, controllable and reliable.

3D sewing robotic arm

Traditional ways of sewing that rely on human hands or sewing machines may see a drastic change, as researchers in eastern China's Zhejiang Province have created a 3D sewing robotic arm.

The robotic arm, about the size of a human, can quickly scan pieces of cloth with a laser scanner, sew them together based on programmed patterns and cut threads. The whole process only takes a few minutes.
