CAIRO, June 26 (Xinhua) -- The Arab Parliament (AP) urged here on Wednesday Romania not to relocate its embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The AP's Speaker Mishaal bin Fahm al-Salami called upon the Romanian president and the heads of their Senate and Chamber of Deputies in a letter to abide by the relevant UN resolutions and respect the historic and legal status of Jerusalem.
In March, Romanian Prime Minster Viorica Dancila said his government has completed an assessment "evaluating the opportunity" to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which resulted in "full consensus" for the decision.
Al-Salami asserted "the AP's rejection of Romania's step to move its embassy to Jerusalem, deeming this step as a violation of international law and legitimate resolutions."
In 1988, Romania was among the countries that rushed to recognize the Palestinian state.
U.S. President Donald Trump declared Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December 2017. Washington moved its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in May 2018.
