The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 201.25 points, or 0.94 percent, from Monday to 21,618.04.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 11.98 points, or 0.77 percent, at 1,568.35.
Marine transportation, textile and apparel, and precision instrument-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
