AMMAN, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Achim Steiner on Tuesday commended Jordan's role in hosting Syrian refugees.
At a meeting in Amman with Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Steiner said he welcomed Jordan's efforts to help Syrian refugees and its role in enhancing regional security and stability.
The UN official also expressed the UNDP's keenness on further enhancing cooperation with Jordan, the state-run Petra news agency reported.
The Jordanian official and Steiner looked into the regional developments and their repercussions in development programs and the exerted efforts to meet the growing needs of Syrian refugees.
Safadi briefed the UN official on challenges the kingdom is facing as a result of hosting more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees.
He reiterated the importance for the international community to make exceptional steps to mitigate the extraordinary circumstances facing Jordan as a result of bearing the repercussions of the Syrian refugee influx.
The Jordanian minister underlined the need for more UN programs that help address the refugee crisis to contribute to helping local communities in facing pressures from the influx.
