KABUL, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Two U.S. soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan, the NATO-led Resolute Support (RS) confirmed Thursday.
"Two U.S. service members were killed on August 21, 2019 in Afghanistan," the RS wrote in a statement.
The brief statement did not say the details, only saying "in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the names of the service members killed in action are being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is completed."
Since Jan. 1, 2015, Afghan security forces have assumed full security charges from NATO and U.S. forces.
Around 16,000 foreign troops have remained in Afghanistan to train and assist local security forces in their fight against insurgents.
The statement came as the United States and Afghanistan's Taliban group are set to resume a fresh round of talks in the Qatari capital of Doha, hoping to end 18 years of fighting.
