RIGA, Sept. 19 (Xinhua) -- Latvian customs has seized more than 3 million contraband cigarettes, Latvian state revenue service said on Thursday.
Customs officials of the state revenue service found the cigarettes at the country's western port of Ventspils while checking a lorry that was to board a ferry for the Swedish port of Nynashamn.
According to the documents, the lorry, which had arrived from Lithuania, was carrying a cargo of chairs destined for Sweden and Denmark. During inspection, customs officials found 3.1 million contraband cigarettes without excise stamps behind the chairs.
It is the second large contraband cigarettes haul in Latvia in less than a month. Last week, the state revenue service reported that 2.4 million contraband cigarettes were found during the customs inspection of incoming railway cars on the border with Belarus. Enditem
