SANTIAGO, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Chilean midfielder Gary Medel is in doubt for the Copa America in Brazil after suffering an ankle injury while playing for Turkish club Besiktas.
The 31-year-old former Inter Milan player was forced off at halftime in Besiktas' 2-1 victory at Silvasspor in the Super Lig on Monday.
"Medel [suffered] a partial tear of the lateral ligament of the right ankle. Treatment has already started," Besiktas said in a statement on Tuesday.
The injury is expected to sideline Medel for at least four weeks, meaning he is likely to miss the rest of the season.
The Copa America will be played in five Brazilian cities from June 14 to July 7.
Defending champions Chile have been drawn in Group C for the continental tournament alongside Uruguay, Ecuador and Japan.
