BARRANQUILLA, April 25 (Xinhua) -- The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) on Thursday nominated Barranquilla's Metropolitano stadium as its preferred venue for the 2020 Copa America final.
The announcement came just over two weeks after the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) declared that Colombia and Argentina would jointly host the tournament.
Teams in the competition's north zone will play all of their group stage matches in Colombia while a southern zone will be based in Argentina in the first phase.
CONMEBOL has yet to announce venues for the knockout rounds and the final.
"Each country has a 50% chance of hosting the final and in our case, Barranquilla is the most appropriate venue," FCF president Ramon Jesurun told a news conference.
CONMEBOL is expected to announce which country will host the final in the coming weeks.
The 2020 Copa America will be the tournament's fourth edition in six years. Chile won it for the first time as hosts in 2015 before taking the title again the next year in a centenary version played in the United States.
Brazil will host the tournament this year from June 14 to July 7.
Next year's edition will be the start of a new four-year cycle, bringing the Copa America in line with the European Championship.
